Conference Call: How to Offer Sanctuary

On July 13, AFSC held an online conference call for congregations and individuals interested in learning more about offering sanctuary to people threatened by deportation. The call was conducted in English and Spanish.

Presenters included:

  • Jeanette Vizguerra, leader in the Denver Sanctuary Coalition who was in sanctuary for months.
  • Representatives of congregations that have offered sanctuary, including the Rev. Randall Keeney of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Greensboro, NC, and David Poundstone, member of the Mountain View Friends Meeting in Denver.
  • Matt Handley, director of litigation for the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, who helped participants understand the legal challenges of sanctuary.
  • Experienced community organizers at the local and national levels, including the Rev. Noel Andersen, grassroots coordinator, Church World Service; Jennifer Piper, director of interfaith organizing, AFSC/staff for the Metro Denver Sanctuary Coalition; Lucy Duncan, director of Friends Relations, AFSC.
