Family & organizations gather to ask Immigration to reconsider Colorado father, Felipe Alaniz Herrera’s case, keep him in the US for Father’s Days to come

June 17, 2014 Denver, CO – For the first time since 2012, Felipe shared in a weekend of celebrations with family; his daughter's high school graduation, his own Father's Day and seven-year anniversary with his wife Carla. “Felipe is the backbone of our family and a good man! Like many of us he made a mistake when he was younger, one he never made again, and he went on to be a key employee, caring father and wonderful partner,” says Carla.

On June 30, 2012, after a fender bender revealed Mr. Alaniz Herrera had a 21 year old warrant for possession of a small amount of drugs, he was detained by state patrol. On July 10, 2012 the drug charge was vacated as the judge found his 21 years of model citizenship more than made up for his mistake. Four months later on November 19, 2012 ICE stopped the vehicle that Felipe was in, with his boss driving, and took Felipe into custody. After 16 months in immigration detention, Felipe was finally released in March of 2014 and has been spending time with his family while awaiting a decision on his UVISA, a victims of crime application pending from a violent assault and robbery Felipe experienced in 2001.

USCIS (US Customs and Immigration Services) has denied his petition citing his 21-year-old conviction as the reason. Felipe’s family, community members, faith and organizational leaders will gather to ask USCIS to reconsider in a show of support for Felipe.
