AFSC joins nationwide actions for immigrant rights

WASHINGTON, DC (April 28, 2017) The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) – a Quaker organization that has worked for immigrant and refugee rights for over 100 years – is joining with communities and organizations across the country for a series of actions on May 1st that will highlight opposition to increased detention and deportation of immigrants, attacks on refugees, rising Islamophobia, racist violence, and the need to create sanctuary for everyone.

“May 1st, International Worker's Day, will be a day of action for immigrants’ and workers’ justice,” said Paul-Andre Mondesir, an advocate for the Haitian community in AFSC’s Miami office. “We are coming together for a powerful purpose, highlighting a vision of genuine economic justice, centering the importance of immigration, labor and justice for our communities.”

AFSC staff have been working tirelessly on campaigns to create sanctuary in schools, on the streets, in congregations, and in cities and counties. Under the banner of #SanctuaryEverywhere, they are compiling resources to help others advocate for sanctuary in their own communities. The organization has also been active at the Federal level, advocating that Congress reject additional funding for immigration enforcement and border militarization.

“Mass detention and deportation in the U.S. violates basic human rights, devastates families, and terrorizes communities on the border and across the country,” said Kathryn Johnson, AFSC’s Policy Impact Coordinator. “We are calling on Congress to vote against additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security, and instead put resources towards human needs.”
