Letter of Solidarity to the Highlander Center

In light of the recent attack, likely carried out by white supremacists, on the Highlander Center we write with our emotional and material support to Highlander’s co-directors, Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson and Rev. Allyn Maxfield-Steele, staff, and all community members connected to the center. As we mourn these losses with you, we want to acknowledge clearly that this was an act of terror directed at the Highlander Center, its community and the movements for freedom that Highlander has nurtured throughout its storied history. We also acknowledge that what transpired on March 29, 2019 on your historic grounds was not only an attack on Highlander, but upon all individuals and organizations that are committed to challenging the power of white supremacy and its manifestations in our world. We recommit ourselves to supporting you and this movement for peace and freedom through vigilance, solidarity and love for one another. We, like you, will not allow this to deter our work and stand ready to support the staff, Board and community of the Highlander Center as they do the same.

In Solidarity,
