Keep up the pressure on your elected officials

Join us today in keeping up the pressure on our elected officials. You can help in two ways:

1. Call your representative and urge them to end the detention quota.

To contact Congress, call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, and ask to be connected to your representative. Adapt the script below to communicate your concerns:

“Hello, my name is ______ and I live in ______.

As your constituent, I urge you to end the federal immigration detention quota that requires Immigration and Customs Enforcement maintain 34,000 immigration detention beds every day.

On August 18, the Department of Justice announced that it will no longer contract with for-profit companies to run federal prisons. It's time for ICE to abandon for-profit immigrant detention, too. As long as the detention quota is in place, we will see more and more people funneled into this for-profit system of mass detention.

Detentions separate families, rob people of their liberty, and, in some locations, subject people to conditions that violate human rights standards and have led to immigrants dying in detention.

You have the power to stop this shameful practice. Support striking the quota from the DHS Appropriations Bill.”

2. Do you use Twitter? Advocate online by tweeting at key members of Congress using these sample tweets.

#EndTheQuota @JudgeJohnCarter @CongCulberson @RepRoybalAllard DOJ stopped #privateprisons now it's your turn to stop for profit detention

#Not1More @JudgeJohnCarter @CongCulberson @RepRoybalAllard Strike the immigrant detention quota from DHS Appropriations. #EndTheQuota

Please contact Congress today. Tell them to end the quota, and start working to keep families together.
