The global movement for justice in Palestine is marking the 2022 Israeli Apartheid Week at the end of March and the beginning of April. Several U.S. activist groups are planning local actions as part of the call on General Mills to move its Pillsbury factory out of Israel's illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Israeli Apartheid Week is an annual opportunity to "strengthen the links between the Palestinian liberation struggle and other struggles against racism, oppression, and discrimination." This year, the war in Ukraine provides new opportunities to examine these links, and the role corporations play in these struggles. Notably, General Mills suspended some, but not all, of its business in Russia, joining hundreds of other corporations that took similar action in response to Russian aggression.
These swift corporate actions expose the global double standard and hypocrisy around Palestine. War, military occupation, land annexation, and apartheid are wrong everywhere, from Palestine to Ukraine.
Last month, Amnesty International solidified the global consensus of naming Israel's treatment of Palestinians as apartheid and a crime against humanity, joining previous similar analyses by other prominent Palestinian, Israeli, and global human rights organizations. Just like in the case of South Africa, large multinational corporations have an important role to play in dismantling this system of oppression.
This Israeli Apartheid Week, join activists across the U.S. targeting General Mills for its support of apartheid. Or organize an action in your city and register it here.
