Regional Dialogues on Migration Policies in the COVID-19 Context

On October 15, 2020 and February 23, 2021, the Migration and Human Mobility program of the LAC Region and the United States Migration and Human Mobility Network (HMM-Network) of AFSC convened More than 40 civil society organizations from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and the United States to participate in two dialogue spaces on the regional migration context in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the change of administration in the United States.

These two dialogues were spaces for exchange about detained, deported, in transit migrants and asylum seekers who travel the Central America, Mexico and the United States migratory route in seek of better living conditions, well-being and security. As organizations that defend the rights of people in mobility, we share various challenges that we face in a context of pandemic, space restrictions, criminalization, militarization and outsourcing of asylum systems that lead us to recognize the importance of building bridges regardless of borders to coordinate, advocate, train and accompany people and families in transit through our territories.

These spaces were a first step to strengthen and promote articulation and coordination from our offices and teams of Migration and Human Mobility of the United States and LAC region.
