Indonesia is one of the most vibrant and diverse democracies in the world. In Indonesia AFSC works with partners around the country to empower communities, bridge conflict divides, and celebrate Indonesia’s rich diversity.

AFSC’s Youth for Peace programs support young peacemakers to organize bridge building activities in several cities across Indonesia. They started as a response to communal violence between ethnic and religious groups in 1998. The tsunami in 2004 led to a sudden expansion of AFSC’s work in the Aceh province where our focus has been in the heavily conflict affected area of East Aceh. AFSC helps rebuild both lives and relationships, so that communities can grow back stronger. AFSC also works in the impoverished West Timor area of Indonesia where thousands of refugees from East Timor settled after the 1999 conflict.
