Hector Cortez, deputy general secretary

As deputy general secretary, Hector has been responsible for AFSC’s overall diversity and inclusion strategy, implementing a new safety and security program, and improving organization-wide operations and systems. Prior to joining AFSC in 2013, Hector served as chief diversity officer and vice president for strategic community engagement for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. His work has been credited with strengthening the organization's ability to engage communities of color in serving children facing adversity. Hector also served as associate executive director for the American Baptist National Ministries board. A native of Utuado, Puerto Rico, Hector was raised in Chicago. His hobbies include drawing, fly fishing, and working on old cars. Hector and his wife, Noemi, have three children—Emilia, Adam, and David—and they recently became grandparents, welcoming little Lucas and Lionel to the family.
