Response to criticism of the October 5 letter on conditioning aid to Israel

On October 5th, 2012 AFSC joined 14 other church groups in calling on congress to condition the provision of U.S. military aid to Israel on Israel’s compliance with applicable U.S. laws. We joined together with these other groups because the content of the letter is consistent with AFSC’s belief that continued unconditional U.S. military assistance to Israel helps sustain the conflict, undermines the long-term security interests of both Israelis and Palestinians, and forestalls the realization of a just and lasting peace. U.S. policy must change.

There were many responses to this letter, both critical and affirming. One prominent response to the letter was a decision by a group of Jewish organizations to cancel the meetings of two Jewish Christian roundtables due to the participation in these roundtables of several Christian groups that had signed the letter to congress. The cancelation of these roundtables was accompanied by a call for meetings between the signatories to the October 5 letter and the leaders of the Jewish organizations who participated in the roundtables. The response from the letter signatories to this request is attached below.
