Rehabilitation in the Coal Fields, 1932

Photo: / AFSC

James Myers’ moving first-person article describes AFSC efforts to feed undernourished children and nursing mothers, and to create alternative means of self-sufficiency. Men were taught to make furniture and to cobble donated shoes for reuse; women’s sewing circles turned donated clothing into usable garments; and small farms and gardens provided marginal food supplementation. The brochure ends with a plea for financial support.
