Child Relief Work in the Bituminous Coal Fields, 1932

Photo: / AFSC

This extremely detailed, 58-page report of child-feeding programs, adult re-education, and social programs includes photographs, charts, and tables. The brochure expresses the need to relocate mining families and alter their total reliance on mining for survival. It includes interesting observations about the isolation of women in these communities, noting that they have almost no friendships among themselves and that some would walk seven miles just to participate in a sewing circle.
