If I Could Change the World Spoken Word Workshop 2015

Saturday, March 21, 2015 - 9:30am - 5:00pm

The American Friends Service Committee invites high school-aged youth interested in spoken word poetry and who want to speak out to help make our community and world better places to live

to a spoken word poetry workshop.

Youth will have the opportunity to create new poems, refine their writing, practice performance of their work and receive mentoring and constructive feedback from at least four spoken word poets and other youth.

Looking for Youth To Change the World 2015

The KC AFSC is beginning the new year with our If I Could Change The World Spoken Word Project for high school - aged youth in the Kansas City area.

We are inviting youth groups and school classes to contact us to participate in this creative project, using the arts to engage youth on issues of war, peace, economic justice and hope for the future.

 We are inspired by the youth who participate in the If I Had A Trillion Dollars youth film project, the If I Could Change the World spoken word project and the summer Social Change Institute. Each year we also have college-aged peace interns who do a phenomenal job learning about peace and justice issues and ways to engage and empower high school-aged youth.

After years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, with their terrible toll of death and destruction, we are fighting again in the Middle East.  But growing numbers of Americans are debating the values and goals of U.S. foreign policy, with its heavy reliance on military intervention.  Why has it been so unsuccessful? What is the appropriate role for our nation in today’s world?  How does our investment in a gigantic, costly military establishment affect our foreign policy decisions?

AFSC's Youth Civic Engagement work in Kansas City had a great year and we are looking for groups to collaborate with for programs for 2014-2015. Our goal is to provide creative ways for youth to learn about issues important to them and out community and to speak out for positive nonviolent social change!

Reverse the Power Festival - Youth Speak Out Video

Youth who participated in the 2014 Social Change Institute spoke out about the need for social change and what they learned in the training.

The Institute was organized by the Kansas City Program of the American Friends Service Committee and took place from June 9 through June 20. The Institute's goals were to empower youth, increase their knowledge and skills of nonviolent social change and deepen their commitments to work for a better community and world.
