What you need to know about the Palestinian elections

April 6, Tuesday at 12 noon ET/ 11 a.m. CT/ 9 a.m. PT

Watch AFC's webinar "What you need to know about Palestinian Elections." The event features Ines Abdel Razek, Soheir Ass'ad, and Salem Barahameh and is facilitated by AFSC’s Jehad Abusalim.

If all goes according to schedule, Palestinians will have the opportunity to vote for the first time in 15 years this year. The Palestinian Legislative Council is to be elected in May, the President of the Palestinian Authority in July, and the Palestinian National Council of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) in August. Significantly, most Palestinian political factions have agreed to participate in these elections -- and the results could lead to significant political changes in Palestine.

However, the elections are also raising many questions:

  • Will the elections move forward if those in power think they may lose?
  • Can elections resolve the split between Fatah and Hamas and help reunite the West Bank and Gaza?
  • How will the voices of those who do not feel represented by traditional political parties be heard?
  • Will Israel interfere with the elections or allow them to occur?
  • Will Israel allow Palestinians living in Jerusalem to vote?
  • Will Israel and the international community engage with Hamas or other sanctioned parties if they join the Palestinian Authority through elections?

Our webinar addresses these and other questions. Speakers include:

Inès Abdel Razek is the Advocacy Director for the Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy (PIPD), an independent Palestinian organization. Prior to joining the PIPD, Inès held advisory positions in the executive offices of the Union for the Mediterranean in Barcelona, the UN Environment Program in Nairobi, and the Palestinian Prime Minister's Office in Ramallah, where she focused on international governance and development cooperation policies. Inès is also an advisory board member of the social enterprise BuildPalestine.

Salem Barahmeh is the Executive Director of the Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy. He is currently a Non-Resident Fellow at the US Middle East Project and previously worked as an international affairs advisor to Dr. Hanan Ashrawi at the PLO and the Palestine Investment Fund. He has also worked at Portland Communications in London, as a Policy and Public Affairs Advisor to Gulf governments, and for the Palestinian Embassy to the United States.

Soheir Asaad is a Palestinian human rights lawyer, feminist and political activist.
