Invest in communities, not policing!

None of us should ever fear violence in our communities, especially from those supposedly charged with promoting public safety. Yet countless Black and Brown people have died at the hands of police.  In 2022, police killed at least 1,201 people. This racist system disproportionately targets people of color for police brutality, imprisonment, and death.

It’s past time to do something different. AFSC supports the Movement for Black Lives, which has called for divestment from policing and investment in Black communities.

Please join us in calling on Congress to support the legislative solutions proposed in the BREATHE Act and the People’s Response Act. Especially important are the provisions that move money out of federal policing and into critical needs such as schools, health care, and transformative justice initiatives. We need more than police reforms. We need a holistic approach to community safety that reduces our reliance on policing and builds healthy, well-resourced communities.
