The Biden administration reopened a detention center for migrant children in Homestead, Florida—essentially imprisoning children who are coming to the U.S. seeking refuge. Many are fleeing violence and poverty and seeking asylum in the United States.

AFSC Florida worked with local and national partners for months to shut down the detention center in 2019, when it held around 2,000 young people under President Trump. Despite our organizing, the Biden administration redesigned this detention camp and renamed it Biscayne Influx Center. Although there are currently no youth detained at the site the possibility of its reopening is high. The detention camp is next to a loud military airbase runway and toxic Superfund site. As far as we know, the site has never been tested to make sure it is safe for children or workers.

We must continue mobilizing to pressure the Biden administration to close the center—and urge him to keep his promise to reunite families and treat immigrants with the respect and dignity we all deserve.
