Material Assistance Program Internship


The internship is administrative and is intended to support the activity of the part-time Material Assistance Program staff.

The specific duties are: Staff collection and distribution of the domestic relief work of Working Essentials supplies program for 18 SF agencies serving the working poor; Organize the monthly volunteer evening (fourth or last Thursday of each month); Filing of correspondence and documents, and creation of archives; Maintain and organize the MAP database (Access); Participate in the regional monthly staff meetings if possible; Respond to requests for information; provide orientation for and serve as tour guide volunteers; participate in and provide minutes for EMAP Committee Members; and make one trip to an East Coast Collection Center (interns fulfilling an 11 or 12 months commitment only).

Compensation ($1,000/month stipend)

Responsibilities

  • Maintain organizational systems, including updating, with volunteer help, a database for tracking outgoing material goods.
  • Coordinate volunteers in collection, sorting, and distribution of donations.
  • Assist with selected administrative tasks, including working as a team member on fund-raising events or appeals.
  • Assist the MAP Coordinator in updating handbook for program operations, as well as in the on-going work of the program.
  • Conduct outreach to Friends and others in the greater SF Bay Area, including program providers, on the work of the Material Assistance Program.
  • Create educational materials for donors, Friends Meetings and the general public that will help build stronger links between the Material Assistance Program and other regional AFSC programs. This work will be done in collaboration with staff from other AFSC programs in the Pacific Mountain Region.

Qualifications

  • Upper level college student or recently graduated undergraduate or comparable life experience.
  • Commitment to social justice, peace and nonviolent approaches to social change.
  • Prior experience working with volunteers preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills (knowledge of Windows and Access and/or Excel database management preferred).
  • Proven self-motivation and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends and evenings.
  • Valid driver's license strongly preferred
  • Experience with the Society of Friends (Quakers) a plus.
