Sam Cox Youth Internship


The American Friends Service Committee's Pacific Mountain Region announces the sixth year of the Sam Cox Internship, an eight-week paid internship for non-Bay Area youth aged 18 to 26. The intern will work with AFSC on anl HIV or lesbian/gay  issue in the San Francisco Bay Area and return to his or her home community with the intent of sharing the fruits of the work experience locally.

AFSC is a Quaker organization supported by individuals of different faiths who care about social justice, humanitarian service and peace. Its work is based on a Quaker belief in the dignity and worth of every person, and a faith in the power of love and nonviolence to bring about change.

Created in memory of Sam Cox, a Quaker historian who died of HIV complications, the internship seeks youth capable of contributing to as well as learning from the rich Bay Area tradition of organizing around HIV and lesbian/gay concerns. Quaker and faith-based applicants are encouraged.

Location Pacific Mountain Region (San Fransisco, CA)
Length of internship Eight weeks
Compensation $2,000 for the eight-week internship (room and board must be planned for out of this stipend)


Responsibilities

  • Design and develop two-month work project on HIV or GLBT/I concern, either with San Francisco AFSC or with local Bay Area organization.
  • Report to Community Relations or Executive Committee results of two-month project.
  • Assist with selected administrative tasks, including working as a team member on fund-raising events or appeals.
  • Conduct outreach to Friends and others in the greater SF Bay Area, including the newly formed SF Peace & Justice Center, program providers, on the lessons learned from the two-month project.

Qualifications

  • Degree of comfort working with GLBT/I communities and with HIV issues and people with AIDS.
  • Commitment to social justice, peace and nonviolent approaches to social change.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills (knowledge of Windows and Access and/or Excel database management preferred).
  • Proven self-motivation and organizational skills.
  • Tie with home faith community.
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends and evenings.
