With AFSC funds, the Children’s Media Center, an Indonesian organization, is implementing a project that develops the creativity and talents of children orphaned by the tsunami in Aceh. The project involves 535 orphaned children who are expressing themselves in writing and through visual arts. Their works will be compiled into books, which will be used to shape non-formal education and child sponsorship programs. The books, in Indonesian, Japanese, and English, will be distributed locally, nationally, and internationally. Children will each receive a book of their own to encourage further creative activity and to serve as a memorial to the loved ones they lost in the tsunami. The first volume, entitled Aneuk Atjeh Lam Duka (Acehenese Children In Their Suffering) was completed in August, with the creative work and profiles of 104 children. The second volume, containing the work and profiles of 123 children, is planned to be available in time for the one-year anniversary of the tsunami.
