Just Like Us review

Dear friends, colleagues, and supporters,

Recently I read Just Like UsThe true story of four Mexican girls coming of age in America, by Helen Thorpe.

As I started reading, I simply couldn’t put the book down. I ended up staying home most of the weekend, barely eating or drinking, that’s how captivating the story is. The author, Helen Thorpe, is a long time supporter of AFSC’s work on immigrant rights and now I can attest she is also a very talented writer.

Knowledgeable of immigration policy and law as well as being a Mexican immigrant myself, very seldom have I read an American account that is not only objective and accurate on facts while respectful of the culture but it is also successful in uncovering the human side of this complex issue, and that is no small feat.  Thorpe makes the issue of immigration not only accessible to anyone but amazingly interesting! I hope you choose it among your next reading selections.

Peace,
Sandra Sanchez
