Kansas City Area School and Youth Groups are Invited to take advantage of powerful opportunity for youth develolpment and leadership

AFSC's Youth Civic Engagement work in Kansas City had a great year and we are looking for groups to collaborate with for programs for 2013-2014. We anticipate that after this year's excellent experiences we will have many more requests from groups wishing to participate next year, so contact us soon.

Last fall, our interns worked with eight student and youth groups to produce six short films for the Kansas City "If I Had a Trillion Dollars" (IHTD) Film Festival. Students learned about federal budget priorities, and created 3-minute videos describing how they would allocate U.S. tax dollars to better meet our community's needs. After having their films shown on the big screen at the Tivoli Theater, three of our youth groups' films were selected as official entries and shown at the national IHTD Film Festival in Washington, DC. This spring the Whatsoever Community Center youth group traveled to our nation¹s capital to see their film screened at the national Festival. They also learned about the legislative process and met with elected officials to speak for their views on the federal budget. In February of this year, we began working with eight groups providing in-class or on-site trainings for the "If I Could Change the World" Spoken Word Project. Over the course of the spring semester, we helped many dozens of youth craft poems on our theme.  Students were then encouraged to attend a daylong workshop with five well-known local poets, who helped the youth create and revise their poems for performance. After the workshop, most of the youth took the opportunity to perform at local venues, including The Writers Place and The Blue Room. Click here to see a playlist of youth performances.

Due to the overwhelming positive response to our 2012-13 programming, we are excited to announce that AFSC will be offering both projects again in the coming year! If you are interested in having your class or youth group participate in any of our civic engagement projects during the 2013-14 school year contact us to reserve a spot in next years schedule. Email us at our office at, call us at 816-931-5256 or contacting me at .

We hope to work with you next year!
