History and Mission
ORITA (a word from the Yoruba language of Africa meaning “crossroads”) was created in 1995 by the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace, and humanitarian service.
ORITA’s mission is to empower youth through activities that teach leadership and capacity-building skills necessary to cope in today’s world.
The ORITA program is held at community sites in partnership with state agencies, community efforts, and school systems. Through community-based research and popular education, ORITA builds relationships necessary for the pursuit of on-going, region-wide strategies for social change.
