Photos by Juan Garcia

This audio visual work tells the untold story of shipwreck, escape from slavery, courageous survival, and the building of a new life in the rainforest of northern Ecuador and Colombia. These Blacks, as they prefer to be called, are descendants of Africans who came on slave ships centuries ago. they survived shipwrecks or escaped from slavery to found fort-like communities where they have lived in harmony with indigenous peoples and the rainforest for more than 400 years. Today, these Afro-Ecuadorians are in danger of losing the resources necesary for their livelihood due to commercialism. In a consciousness-raising effort, El proceso, a coalition of Black groups who are working for territorial, cultural, social, economic, and political rights, fight for the survival of these Forgotten People.
