Afghan
Dolls

AFSC's partner, Shuhada Organization, a local NGO, started the
doll making program with its own resources in 1997. Initially the
project was implemented among the Afghan refugee women and widows
living in the urban areas of Quetta city, Pakistan. The aim of the
program was to enable the refugee women and widows to support their
families. Shuhada Organization was sending the dolls for sale to
USA, Switzerland and Italy. The incomes generated from the sale
were distributed among the women who made the dolls. After the fall
of Taliban, most of the women involved in the doll making project
returned back to their hometowns scattered all over Afghanistan.
Some families that did not return home continue to make dolls
and send them to Shuhada Organization in Kabul. Over time this program
became self sustainable. The women are working for themselves and
selling their dolls to foreign visitors. Recently Shuhada Organization
has decided to start the same program in Kabul city, engaging primarily
women and widows.
For an additional $5 you will receive a traditional covering “Burqa” blue colored with exquisitely embroidered detail.
Dolls are $20.00 each plus shipping and handling.
