The first-ever US Social Forum brought people together to analyze the problems facing the movement, build strategy, and to learn from each other. The USSF springboards from the World Social Forum, and the many regional social forums that have taken place all over the world.

AFSC Workshops and Events held at USSF 2007

Dreams and Nightmares - A memorial to the Iraqis killed in the war. Facilitators: Peter Lems, Mary Zerkel, Ra’ed Jarrar

Fourth Annual Sutherland Institute for Africa Activists - This conference held annually in Washington will be taking place this year in Atlanta at the social forum. Facilitators: Imani Countess, Anyango Reggy

The Wars Abroad and at Home - Connecting expansion of militarism, growth of prisons, US immigration enforcement policies, and the global economy. Facilitators: Jessica Walker Beaumont, Benjamin Prado

The Prison System in the U.S. - U.S. role in exporting torture to other communities around the globe. Facilitators: Darryl Jordan, Koyuki Yip

Other AFSC workshops being planned with partner organizations:

Colombia - sponsored by partner organization, Witness for Peace, and includes presenters from Colombia. Facilitator: Natalia Cardona

Migration, gender and trade issues - organized by staff from Trade Matters team with the Network on Gender and Trade. Facilitators: Josefina Castillo

Counter recruitment - organized by different partner organizations around the US, with AFSC staff. Facilitators: Darlene Gramigna, Janine Schwab, Sheena Gibbs

Foreign military bases - organized with other US-based organizations who are working on the International Network for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases. Facilitators: Bal Pinguel, Ikaika Hussey

The US occupation of Iraq, from Iraqi and US perspectives - in collaboration with US Labor Against the War and will feature the speakers from Iraq. The USSF will be the last stop of their tour. Facilitators: Peter Lems, Ra’ed Jarrar
