AFSC Peacebuilding Unit
AFSC’s Peacebuilding Unit (PBU) works for a world of peace and justice, based on Quaker principles and a vision of a nonviolent world order. Staff works toward the abolition of war, a fair sharing of the world’s resources, an end to militarism, the employment of nonviolent means for common security, and the realization of universal human rights—economic, social, political, cultural, and rights of conscience.
PBU staff mobilize youth, Quakers and other people of faith, community activists, and other constituencies to advocate for just U.S. foreign policies. Current PBU programs focus on Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, and building a vigorous U.S. peace movement. PBU programs challenge those aspects of domestic and transnational policy that threaten peace, economic justice and a just distribution of wealth.
Staff develop and disseminate educational resources and organize events and campaigns that promote peace, global justice and international understanding. The Peacebuilding unit educates the public, the media, and policymakers about nonviolent alternatives to military action and the impact of globalization on human lives. Staff members represent AFSC in national and transnational coalitions working for disarmament, economic justice and human rights.
