Since 1942, the Pacific Southwest Region of the AFSC has been sowing seeds, consistently advocating for positive social change. Our programs evolved as the issues facing our world changed, yet our goals and our principles remained constant: We strive to see goodness in every person and we join in solidarity with those who struggle to reap a harvest of peace and justice.
Middle East Peace Education Program
Counter-Recruitment and Alternatives to the Military
Our new internet radio pilot project, KAMV.org, affirms the moral foundations nonviolence, social justice and peace. Each show explores the fundamental motivations that guide our social and political values. We will deepen our understanding of what drives people to believe, think, and act the way they do.

Middle East Peace Education Program

For more than thirty years, AFSC has brought Arabs and Israelis,
Jews, Christians and Muslims together in common cause to work for
justice and peace in the Middle East. In Southern California, the
Middle East Peace Program is a source for balanced information and
resources, organizing speaking tours, public events, and education
campaigns and working for change in policy and practice to ensure
Israeli security and Palestinian self-determination and to end the
US war against Iraq. In the past, we have also addressed the war
in Lebanon, the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, the growing Islamic
movement in the Middle East, as well as the impact of economic sanctions
on the Iraqi civilian population, upcoming negotiations regarding
Jerusalem, and a range of women's and human rights issues of current
interest. Visit mepeacela.org >
Counter-Recruitment and Alternatives to the Military
The Counter-Recruitment and Alternatives to the Military Program
works with youth, parents, and teachers who are organizing for peace
and against military recruitment. The program also works in coalition with teachers from Los Angeles Unified School
District who are organizing to demilitarize their schools.
Literature and resources to aid organizing and educational efforts, like the new booklet, Great Careers: Alternatives to the Military, are available online.
AFSC Bookstore
The Los Angeles office also hosts the AFSC Bookstore, with books on Quakerism, peace and social justice concerns, as well as ethnic communities. Our bookstore carries a selection of books with emphasis on multicultural, peace and justice, Quaker topics, and children's books.
