Other Options: Alternatives to Militarism

Other Options: Alternatives to Militarism addresses issues of militarism and military service, conscientious objection, and nonviolence as they relate to the choices we face as individuals, as communities, and as a country.

Ongoing Projects

  • Other Options for Young People:
The U.S. military spends more than 2.5 billion annually on efforts to encourage enlistment in the armed services. At local events, community discussions, and through our resource center, Other Options offers materials to ensure young people have complete and accurate information before making the life-altering choice to enlist. We connect young people seeking education, employment, or purpose with non-violent options.

  • Courage of Conscience:
Throughout the world and throughout history, individuals have refused on moral and spiritual grounds to fight and kill other human beings or to support institutions and policies that perpetuate violence. We honor the acts of conscientious objectors. We support people who, in their daily lives, are motivated by their consciences to object to violence and militarism.

  • Eyes Wide Open: New York & New Jersey:
Soldiers from New York and New Jersey and Iraqi civilians killed in the war in Iraq are remembered in the regional version of Eyes Wide Open, part of the national Eyes Wide Open traveling memorial. The exhibit is available to community groups interested in creating a forum to stimulate reflection and discussion of the human and financial cost of war in our region.
