Central Garden Donates
to Red Cross
AFSC's Stup garden in Sarajevo recently donated a portion of its vegetable production to the Stari Grad public kitchen operated by the Red Cross. The garden has donated almost 900 pounds of cucumbers harvested in the greenhouse to the kitchen. Established in 1992, the Stari Grad public kitchen has helped over 1600 refugees at the time of its founding, and today there are 1100 beneficiaries, mainly socially endangered and retired people without any income.
AFSC's decision to donate vegetables from the Stup garden was based on the activities in the garden and the large number of participants. All of the participants in the garden volunteer in the greenhouse and have little or no income but wish to help others in Sarajevo who are in need. All greenhouse activities in 2004 were completely conducted by Stup garden participants.
Seta
Zilha holds donated
cucumbers
Thanks to the hard work and responsibility of Seta Zilha, the Stari Grad kitchen has been able to help thousands of disadvantaged people. Seta began doing humanitarian work after the death of her 25 year old daughter who was a medical student. With the help of the people around her, she overcame her suffering and decided to dedicate her life to helping others in need.
Seta spends every day in the kitchen without any financial compensation, but receives the satisfaction in the happiness that she brings to those who come to the Red Cross. According to Seta, the beneficiaries in the kitchen are of different ethnicities, and often share meals together without any conflicts.
Seta has expressed great pleasure and gratitude for the garden's donation, especially because the donation comes from people who have almost no financial support.
