Conflict Resolution

Conflict Resolution

Begun in 1992, the Conflict Resolution Program is an outgrowth of peace education efforts undertaken since the 1950's. It facilitates the use of practical and creative nonviolent processes used in the growing field of conflict prevention, resolution, and transformation.

Community Violence Prevention workshop

With community partners, the Program seeks to address conflict in real and practical ways both locally and internationally. It helps individuals and communities whose lives are intimately affected by persistent problems or extreme violence, to build constructive responses to their disputes.

The program provides:

  • A clear and credible voice in the New York metropolitan area of the value of long-term commitments to the nonviolent resolution of differences
  • A resource and referral center for communities, organizations, and AFSC programs seeking to address conflict through appropriate nonviolent methods
  • Implementation of specific processes, including dialogues, within and between specific communities
  • Collaborations with national and international conflict resolution practitioners, organizations, and learning centers

Program Initiatives

Community and Conflict Resources

As part of its efforts, the Conflict Resolution Program offers a list of resources for community members in the New York metropolitan area who seek materials, services or learning opportunities to help in managing their conflicts in constructive ways. The Program always welcomes inquiries from individuals or groups for advice and suggestions on where to look for more information.

The Haitian-American Community Dialogue

The Haitian-American Community Dialogue is the latest (and only continuing) of three different dialogues supported by the Expatriate Community Dialogue Project. Initiated in 1995, the Haitian-American Community Dialogue brings together Haitians and Haitian-Americans living in the New York area who are interested in overcoming obstacles to building healthy and sustainable institutions in the Haitian-American community by undertaking constructive dialogue about differences within the community.

Community Violence Prevention

The Violence Prevention Project aims to strengthen and support the work of groups dedicated to addressing community violence in New York and around the world. By facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experiences among those working on issues such as gun violence, sexual assault, domestic and family violence, and youth violence, the project strives to build a network of service and advocacy organizations that can help each other more effectively confront these problems. The project focuses on promoting preventive activities that go beyond responding to incidences of violence to tackle the systemic causes of community violence.
