WHAT WE OFFER

We will orient you to the program, the work and to the American Friends Service Committee.

You will have regular supervision and before leaving, an opportunity to sit with your supervisor and evaluate your experience with her or him.

Newark staff arrange for 6 to 8 lunchtime seminars on topics realted to our work and our socail concerns, to be offered to interns, usually on Wednesdays. This year for the first time we hope to have at least 4 of these in the New York Office.

You may want to refer to our FAQs for the answers to some of your other questions.

HOURS REQUIRED AND STIPEND TO BE PAID

The internships take place between June 1 and August 30, 2008.  The schedue is fairly flexible between those dates.  In order for the intern to have enough exposure to our work and time to carry out the assigned projects, internships should last no less than 8 weeks.  The stipend for the internship is $2,200 and each intern is expected to work for 210 hours.  That works out to about $10.25 per hour.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In the New York Metropolitan Region's Internships you will learn by doing, hearing, speaking and seeing. With staff support you will participate directly with clients and in research projects. You will work along with us and you will ask questions and we’ll get into discussions about real-life issues.

The learning experience will involve increasing understanding of how skill-building and direct exposure to issues (experiencing and responding) inform one another.
