Frequently Asked Questions about Summer Internships

FAQ's - Click on a question:

How soon will I know if my application is being seriously considered?

NYMRO Administrative and program staff members will share and read your applications as they come in. Some will be set aside to follow up with. An email will be sent to candidates not selected as soon in the process as that decision is made.

If you have been selected as a viable candidate we will email and/or call you to pursue our evaluation of your application. Interns will be notified of their appointment by phone or email as soon as we make definite decisions. In response to your agreement to take the internship an appointment letter will be sent to you for your signature and signed by the Internship Coordinator.

When places have been filled we will stop reading applications and send out email notices that the selection for this year is closed.

When will my internship start?

Internships typically begin the first week of June. Should you be accepted, you will work out your starting and ending dates directly with your supervisor.

When will I complete my internship?

Most summer interns complete their hours in 8 weeks. Some, who may need to take on other part time work spread out the work to 12 weeks.

Are there any fixed dates during the internship when I will be expected to be available?

Yes, there is an orientation that will be held the first week of June.  If accepted, you will receive notification confirming the date.

In late July or early August, there will be a formal internship report and ice cream social.  That date will be announced at the internship orientation. Each intern will report on her or his work to the intern group and staff supervisors, along with other interested folks.

What hours will I be expected to work?

Office hours in the New York City and Newark, NJ offices are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some projects that deal with community groups and community education will have evening or weekend activities. You will be in charge of your own schedule and, in consultation with your supervisor, you will prioritize and participate in activities that are important to your work.

All interns are urged to participate in one project activity, other than the project they are assigned, in order to have a better understanding of the variety of work that we do at the AFSC.

Do you have a dress code?

In the summer, and depending on the work we expect to be doing that day, most of the staff members dress comfortably and casually, keeping in mind that during our work with AFSC we represent the organization wherever we are identified as AFSC staff or interns. Use your judgment.

Do you provide housing?

AFSC does not provide housing for interns in the New York Metropolitan Region.

One of the most popular sites in for finding housing in the NYC area is Craig's List.

NYU has limited dorm space available for the summer. Check it out here: NYU Summer Housing

If you would like to share a place with another intern you may ask in your letter of interest that, should you be accepted for an internship, you would like us to give your name, email address and cell phone to other accepted interns so you may network.

How and When will I be paid? Is there any other compensation?

You may receive a check at your AFSC office or mailed to you or you may elect to have your checks deposited directly into your bank account. All paychecks are prepared on or about the 15th and 30th of every month.

With the approval of your supervisor you will be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses for travel in the course of your work day. Should you be asked to travel for AFSC during your internship your expenses would be paid.

Will AFSC withhold taxes from my stipend?

Yes. All payroll laws and conventions will be followed.

How many interns do you expect to accept this summer?

We will have 8 to 11 interns in the Newark, NJ office and 4 in the New York City Office.
