New Mexico Annual Farmer Gathering 2023

By Patrick Jaramillo

During the last days of February 2023, AFSC New Mexico hosted its 10th Annual Farmer Gathering. It was the first in-person, indoor event since January 2020, and we were very happy to see everyone.

Farmers and staff from partner organizations and local government agencies gathered in person and virtually at the Santa Fe Friends Meeting House to reconnect and strengthen relationships. This came after so much time locked down or distancing due to public health concerns.

In addition to welcoming us into their space, Friends from the Santa Fe Meeting also had the capability of offering a hybrid option for those who could not make the drive. Special thanks to the four Santa Fe Friends, including the clerk, who volunteered during this two-day event.

Almost 40 people who are growing food and medicine for community, farmers markets, schools, ECE (early childhood education) centers, or supporting those efforts joined the convening. They shared information and challenges of stewarding land and water resources in a changing climate and rapidly gentrifying communities.

We shared pictures, stories, songs, prayers, and delicious food prepared by local farmers/caterers from The Feasting Place, which prepared local, traditional staples such as atole and chicos. A good time was had by all, as they say.
