American Friends Service Committee Statement on the Continuing Violence in Kenya

We can no longer afford to worship the god of hate or bow before the altar of retaliation. -- Martin Luther King, Jr. 1967

February 19, 2008

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is deeply concerned and saddened by the continuing violence and suffering across Kenya. Our thoughts and prayers go to the families and friends of the victims of the violence, and to those who have been displaced from their homes in the past few weeks since the election.

We pray that the people of Kenya will face these difficult times by strengthening their resolve to be a beacon of stability in East Africa and embrace the opportunity to work for unity. We are especially mindful of countless courageous individuals who have chosen to address their anger, frustration, and grievances nonviolently.

AFSC calls upon all political parties, community leaders and interested individuals across Kenya to renounce violence now and to work to stop the ongoing killings, cruelty and violent attacks.

Leaders from all sectors and ordinary citizens must put aside party affiliations for the sake of peace. Political and civic leaders must use their influence to call for an end to the killing and violence.

The current violence threatens not only Kenya’s future, but also that of the surrounding region. Any proposals to resolve the present crisis must be the result of meaningful dialogue and negotiation and all agreements must have the prevention of future conflict as one of their fundamental aims.

AFSC continues to monitor and support the initiatives of civil society organizations, Quaker churches and other peace organizations. We lift up in our hearts the mediation efforts of Mr. Kofi Annan and others. We pray their efforts along with those of others will bring lasting peace to Kenya.
