AFSC Statement on the Violence in Kenya

PHILADELPHIA, PA [January 4] — The American Friends Service Committee is deeply troubled by the outbreak of violence in Kenya following the recent elections, which has resulted in many fatalities and much destruction.

All violence is tragic, but even more so in a country that has been comparatively successful in resolving internal differences non-violently. Kenya also plays an anchoring role in the region, politically, economically and logistically, and surrounding countries are already beginning to feel the effects of the conflict.

We remain steadfast in our belief in the transforming power of love and non-violence as a force for reconciliation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Kenya, in particular those who are standing witness to the essential humanity of all Kenyans and doing what they can to restore calm in their communities.
