Gulf Coast Program

Youth Leadership Institute

The Gulf Coast Program is working with youth, parents, teachers and other community organizations to end the school-to-prison pipeline.  The Gulf Coast Program is based on a comprehensive approach that includes the creation of a youth Leadership Institute to train a cadre of youth “peer educators”.  We are training tomorrow’s leaders today.  These peer educators will become community leaders and mobilize other youth to contribute to the rebuilding and economic revitalization of Katrina-affected communities. The Youth Leadership Institute will provide follow-through activities year round to ensure the following:

  • Continuously increase the capacity of youth to manage the ever-changing dynamics of life in post-Katrina New Orleans;

  • Equip youth with the skills to create proactive approaches to the issues that affect their lives; and

  • Build and pass on to other youth skills and values that will enrich their lives and encourage them to live with confidence, optimism, and a personal sense of ethics.
