Joint Experts' Statement on Iran

A group of 20 former U.S. officials and pre-eminent Iran experts recently released five specific steps the Obama administration could take on Iran.

  • Replace calls for regime change with diplomacy.
  • Allow Iran to help shape the future of the region.
  • Address the nuclear issue in a broader context.
  • Support human rights through effective means.
  • Re-energize the Arab-Israeli peace process and act as an honest broker.

Our work

AFSC's Iran program is working with people in the U.S. and Iran to increase understanding and friendship between the people of Iran and the U.S. and to normalize diplomatic relations between the governments of Iran and the U.S.

To achieve these goals, the Service Committee is working toward:

  • Increased institutional relations between U.S. and Iranian organizations promoting interfaith dialogue and peace studies.
  • Direct, comprehensive negotiations without preconditions between the two countries.
  • A U.S. congressional bill calling for normalization of diplomatic relations with Iran.

Program Activities

Building on AFSC's tradition of addressing conflict through personal contact between individuals of parties in conflict or potential conflict, AFSC co-facilitated several meetings between faith leaders from the United States and high-level Iranian religious and government officials in 2006. These included three meetings with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who expressed willingness for negotiations between Iran and the United States if the United States government showed goodwill.
