FRIENDS' PEACE DIALOGUE - Speaker Series

2nd Thursday of Every Month through June, 2010

The American Friends Service Committee's Friend's Peace Dialogue is a unique speaker series dedicated to promoting nonviolence, community and social justice through positive communication.  Each month, AFSC hosts a special guest or partnering organization to lead a discussion about their efforts to create social change through the arts, education, humanitarian relief, or nonviolent protest and political action.

The series is held in the American Friends Service Committee office at 634 S. Spring St. in  Downtown LA from 7:00 – 8:00 pm.  Download complete program series schedule here.

Thursday, Feb. 11, 7:00 pm
Featuring Liz Grover, Hector Aristizabal and other guests

At the age of 22, Liz Grover bought a one-way ticket to  Afghanistan with only $100 in her pocket and no job lined up.  Within 2 weeks, she landed a job as a journalist, and later hired by the United Nations to facilitate the country’s first democratic election in 2005.  Hear about her amazing journey, and learn more about the Afghan people and culture.

Joining her will be Hector Aristizabal, who last year spent 3-weeks in Afghanistan working with Afghan human rights activists, victims of war, women, orphans, mental health providers, educators, and artists.  Hector, a native of Colombia, is a dynamic speaker, educator and artist.  Using his passion for the arts as method for resolving conflict, he has traveled extensively throughout the world to bring healing in war-torn countries.

Find out how you can work together with AFSC to end the U.S. militarization of Afghanistan and promote alternate, nonviolent ways to rebuild the country.  The series is free and open to the public.  Seating is limited, so please arrive early.  The speaker series will take place during Downtown LA's Artwalk, so consider planning an evening in the area. Parking is available at Joe's parking, $8.

On Exhibit: Canvassing Peace

January 14 to August 12, 2010
Friends Gallery

Canvassing Peace offers a a kaleidoscope of artists' perspectives on the meaning of peace, democracy, community, social identity, and the impact of wars past and present on the human psyche. Nine uniquely expressive artists explore the range of emotion generated during the arduous journey to social justice and the bureaucracies and barriers to peace encountered along the way.

Poster artist Robbie Conal and syndicated cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz use bold imagery and unapologetic satirical commentary in their wake-up calls to action. The works of Gail Gordon Carter, Michelle Cohen, Fabian Debora, Eric Estenzo, Paul Krehbiel, Thinh Nguyen and Linda Dalal Sawaya challenge and energize people in their struggle towards an earned community of peace.

The exhibit runs Jan 14 through Aug 12, 2010. Weekdays, 10am-4pm and Downtown Art Walk Nights, 6-8pm. Friends Gallery is located at 634 S. Spring St.
