New Empowerment for Women is located in the coalfields of southern West Virginia, New Empowerment for Women Plus offers direct services to people in need and advocates for those in crisis while it attempts to change systems that keep people poor and oppressed. NEW Plus provides a safe space where people, particularly those shut out of traditional decision-making, can come together across race and class lines to strategize and address community needs.
Our work is aimed at eliminating racism and helping low-income families achieve greater stability through safe, affordable housing and equal access to higher education and jobs that pay living wages. To this end, NEW Plus operates a mentoring program for African-American high school students; makes home repairs to allow senior citizens to remain in their homes; holds an annual celebration of black history and culture; and sponsors community forums on issues affecting low-income and working families.
