In October 2003, a group came together to recognize that organizing, educating and empowering LGBT immigrants and asylees is essential in order to address the challenges in every aspect of their lives, including discriminatory immigration laws. AFSC has provided space and technical assistance to the QuIR Project since its inception.

Led by and comprised of LGBT and HIV+ asylees, asylum seekers and immigrants from more than 50 countries, the QuIR Project aims to address issues surrounding LGBT immigrants who face isolation within their own immigrant communities, on one hand, and xenophobia and racism within both the queer and straight communities, on the other. The QuIR Project strives to provide a much needed "safe space" for LGBT and HIV+ immigrants allowing them to network, assist one another, share information and resources, and advocate on issues affecting the queer immigrant community.

The QuIR project meets monthly and welcomes LGBT and HIV+ immigrants of all genders, nationalities, religions and socio-economic backgrounds.
