Israeli Conscientious Objector Profiles

Yael Greenvald-Drier Yael Greenvald-Drier

My name is Yael Greenvald-Drier. I am 17 years old and live in Rehovot, Israel.

I am refusing for multiple reasons. The main reason is the occupation. I cannot take part in a structure that oppresses, occupies, and that is hurting all of the people in this land in one way or another. I cannot take part in an army that tortures animals, [as reported in the March 17, 2000 Ha'aretz article, Day of the Dolphin] and that I believe discriminates against womyn and anyone who isn't white. I oppose the militarization of Israeli society, which takes us on the fast track to fascism. The violence against demonstrators is horrible - how can I join an army that is shooting at my friends? How can I join an army that has no problem with gassing me, shooting shock grenades at me, or even shooting rubber bullets at me?

Soon, I will get a letter from the army asking me to come begin the paperwork regarding my induction. After I get the letter I will send a letter to the army asking them to release me for conscience reasons. There is a chance that if I refuse to be drafted I will go to jail.
