Beyond Dictators and Occupation: A Way Forward in Iraq Samir Adil, President of Iraq Freedom Congress
"Through nonviolent demonstrations, sit-ins, gatherings, and media we struggle to end the occupation, forming a non-ethnic and non-religious government where people are recognized as human beings." ~ Samir Adil, March 14, 2006
*****
Come hear Samir Adil, cofounder and general secretary of the Iraqi Freedom Congress.
The event is free and open to the public.
This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from an Iraqi talking about efforts to build nonviolent opposition to the U.S. occupation and sectarian violence. The Iraqi Freedom Congress is dedicated to building harmony among all Iraqis, regardless of religious or ethnic identity and promotes democracy and secularism through a people's movement -- based in the student, labor and human rights communities. Its members are also creating a television station that focuses on peace issues.
The Freedom Congress promotes a "third way" forward for Iraq, through nonviolent techniques. It offers positive opportunities for Americans to contribute to peace and unity in that country. They are involved in the Federation of Workers Councils and Unions in Iraq, the Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq and the Union of the Unemployed in Iraq. They produce a newsletter called Iraq Weekly.
Samir Adil will begin a speaking tour of the Eastern Seaboard with this evening in Philadelphia. In mid-May, he will join other Iraqis for the unveiling of a new Iraq memorial at the Eyes Wide Open exhibit on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. over mothers day weekend. The event will is called Silence of the Dead | Voices of the Living: A Witness to End the War in Iraq.
The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace, and humanitarian service. Its work is based on the belief in the worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.
