Mass Civil Resistance to the War - September 26

Henry David Thoreau in his classic work "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience" summed up our challenge saying "Dissent without disobedience is consent." The timeless lesson of Thoreau is that to protest up to the point of legal limit [and no more] is to accept the chief legitimizing tool for the crimes of state - the use of law and the legal protection provided the war-makers.

The invasion of and continuing war of occupation in Iraq stands among the chief crimes in the history of U.S. war-making and empire. It must be resisted. Nonviolent Civil Resistance to the criminality that is Bush's War is an affirmation, under the Nuremberg principles and other dictates of international law, of the legal responsibility of the citizen, especially in a time of war, to resist the crimes of state. The moral law of all the great faith traditions is no less clear: that in the divine mandate of justice and love lies the responsibility to choose God's law over the dictates of the state.

If there ever was a time to resist, it is now!

The Civil Resistance at the White House will be the first nationally organized expression of resistance to the war. I hope that members of your group or throughout your region of the country will constitute yourselves as a September 26th Action Affinity group to participate in Civil Resistance at the White House.

United for Peace & Justice has announced that on September 26 there will be nonviolent resistance as part of the 3-day Anti-War Mobilization, September 24 - 26, in Washington, DC.

REMEMBER AND RESIST
A call to action for mass civil resistance at the White House on Monday, Sept. 26, 2005.

Mourn the Dead.
Resist the War.
Bring U.S. troops home, now!

Be part of an historic mass nonviolent action to end the war in Iraq.

For the last two and half years the U.S. war and occupation of Iraq has brought immeasurable death and destruction. This is a war that never should have happened, a war based on lies and greed. It is time to end it and bring our troops home, now.

United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) invites you to participate in a mass civil resistance action at the White House on Monday, September 26, 2005. As part of three days of public protest against the war in Iraq, this action will provide a dramatic opportunity to more directly express your opposition to the war makers.

Building on many traditions of nonviolent action and civil resistance, the protest at the White House will bring together people from different communities and constituencies. For some people this will be the first time they have risked arrest, for others this will be something they have done before. But for all who participate, the action at the White House will be a vehicle to communicate our deeply held convictions that this war must end now.

Our action on September 26th will remember and mourn the precious Iraqi and U.S. lives lost in this war while forcefully resisting the Bush White House that is responsible for the carnage and suffering. And while we will be at the White House, others will be on Capitol Hill as part of a day of grassroots lobbying, pointing out the ways Congress has been a partner in the war-making and that our representatives must now must do their part to end this illegal, immoral war.

We will take our grief and outrage directly to the President, demanding that he hear our message - Bring the Troops Home Now, no more death and destruction. We will begin by solemnly encircling the White House to the intonement of bells and then move in waves to the White House gates to deliver our message. We will not leave until our message is heard!

The nonviolent civil resistance actions being organized by United for Peace and Justice will be focused on the White House. We welcome the creative ideas of affinity groups from around the nation that will help make this the strongest statement possible. And we encourage you to help us bring large numbers of people to participate in this important protest.

UFPJ also expresses solidarity with activists who may act elsewhere that day in a nonviolent manner.
