Indonesia
Program Summary
| A volunteer women's health facilitator. |
Indonesia is the fourth largest nation and the most populous Muslim nation in the world. AFSC’s has been engaged with Indonesia since the young diplomats programs and regional exchanges of the 1960’s and 70’s. AFSC’s current program in Indonesia grew out of work initiated by the Quaker International Affairs Representatives in the late 1990’s. In the wake of communal violence between ethnic and religious groups which broke out after the financial crisis and fall of Suharto in 1998, AFSC supported regional exchanges and research on community level peacebuilding. Innovative work with youth volunteers in Jogjakarta grew into the Youth for Peace program [see below]. The tsunami in 2004 led to a sudden expansion of the work and prompted AFSC to establish an office in the country. AFSC’s is now registered under the Department of Social Welfare as an international organization engaged in peacework.
