Immigration Stories
The following people agreed to share their stories about how current immigration policy have affected their lives. Follow the links below to hear them tell their stories in our audio slide shows.
Iris
Almost five years ago, Iris was shocked to learn that her fiance was held at customs in the Newark International Airport. He was subsequently detained and deported back to Israel, where he tries to live off subsistence jobs while waiting to be reunited with Iris in New Jersey. Sadly, his appeal to get into the U.S. has been caught in red tape for nearly half a decade and they hope to be reunited in March 2008, after his five-year bar against entry into the U.S. is lifted. We interviewed her in her home November 2007. Hear her story.
Juan Carlos
Juan Carlos is a high schooler in New Jersey. Last year, federal immigration agents raided his house, held his mother (at left in the photo) at gunpoint, and detained him for 2 months in a nearby prison in a case of mistaken identity. He is now finishing his senior year and hopes to go to college. We interviewed him and his mother in their home November 2007. Hear his story.
