Apr 30, 2008    7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

On Wednesday, April 30, 2008, from 7:00-10:00 P.M., The Raging Grannies, plus their talented and performing friends and families, invite you to a fundraiser for the Indy Media Center in Denver
at the Mercury Cafe, 2199 California St. There is no admission or cover charge, but the Raging Grannies encourage your generous donations to support the Indy Media Center. Attendees will also be able to purchase dinner and beverages at the Mercury Café during the performances.

Ranging from social commentary to jazz to Chilean music to poetry by Susie Q, the line-up of entertainment will include the Raging Grannies, Gary Ball, Last Note, Askimbo, Otis and the Professors, Marcia and Pepe Cornejo, Background Noise, Gott Jazz Duo, Matt Buckstein, and the Last Note Singers.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the Indy Media Center in Denver, part of the Independent Media Center movement in the US. Born from the World Trade Organization protest in Seattle, the role of Independent Media is to offer an alternative to traditional media. Working “horizontally,” it reports to the grassroots community, to and about people who are largely excluded from coverage such as youth, women, GLBT, and people of color. It provides resources to help these groups get their message out and heard.

In the tradition of wise women elders, the mission of the Raging Grannies of Denver is to promote global peace, justice, and social and economic equality by raising public awareness through the medium of song and humor. Dressed in outfits designed to mock the stereotype of the “little old lady,” the Raging Grannies encourage listeners to have a little laugh as they consider the serious content of the songs. Using tunes of old songs and writing their own new lyrics, songs are constantly being changed or created to keep step with current issues.

The goal of the Raging Grannies is to challenge their audiences to work to bring about the social changes that are required in order to end economic oppression, particularly of women and children, and to end racial inequality, environmental destruction, human rights violations, and arms proliferation.

“What Are We Raging About? We are enraged about the poor conditions that people are forced to endure in their lives, and about the condition of the earth that will be left to our precious grandchildren. We sing out to gain respect for all persons and encourage everyone to grow above their prejudices. We rage against "corporate greed" and sing for "one world" in which Justice is evident everywhere and Peace reigns.”
