After the results of the elections in Kenya were announced, a series of violent actions claimed the lives of many, destroyed homes and livelihoods and displaced more than 150,000 people. The violence in the aftermath of the elections arises from long, deep seeded factors that threaten to fracture the fabric of peace that Kenyans have constructed among communities of diverse ethnic and political identities for years. AFSC joins the voices of the overwhelming majority of Kenyans in rejecting the violence, condemning the killings and supporting efforts toward a political and social process that leads to peace and justice.

In the aftermath of the violence, AFSC is providing some immediate financial aid to those who have been most directly affected by the loss of life, home and livelihood. AFSC will channel its support through two Quaker organizations and one network of Kenyan non-profits.

Organizations supported by AFSC's crisis fund for Kenya

Africa Great Lakes Initiative (AGLI)

The African Great Lakes Initiative (AGLI) of the Friends Peace Teams strengthens, supports, and promotes peace activities at the grassroots level. To this end, AGLI responds to requests from local religious and non-governmental organizations that focus on conflict management, peace building, trauma healing, and reconciliation. Through AGLI’s representative located in Lugari District, Western Kenya, AFSC’s support will help with the purchase and distribution of the necessary supplies to victims directly impacted by the conflict, such as soap, salt, cooking oil, firewood, sugar, tea, rice, blankets.

Friends United Meeting (FUM)

Friends United Meeting (FUM), includes regional associations of Friends, local meetings (churches) and affiliated organizations.
AFSC’s support will help with the purchase of medicines for two hospitals, Lugulu Hospital and Kaimosi Hospital located in Western Kenya, which are serving people affected by the conflict. The hospitals have already identified that there is a need for medicines to treat HIV/AIDS as well as cholera.

Support to other organizations

A network of concerned citizens and several well-established Kenyan non-governmental organizations (ngos) with the support of influential Kenyan peace makers will organize a public call for an end to the violence and to hold political leaders accountable for resolving the election impasse. Through the use of the Kenyan press and other mass media the network has worked to assure that events are being reported accurately and will not further enflame the situation.

AFSC’s support will be channeled through the Nairobi Peace Initiative (NPI) to this network that will help the affected communities to bury their dead with dignity as a necessary and first step in the healing and reconciliation process.
