Memphis, TN
January 28-30, 2005

The motel sign overlooks sweeping rows of boots and shoes.

One could hardly find a more fitting location for Eyes Wide Open than the National Civil Rights Museum. It is housed in the Lorraine Hotel where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968.

Bitter, wet weather curtailed the outdoor exhibit to one day. Still, more than 1400 pairs of boots representing fallen soldiers, and 1,000 pairs of civilian shoes representing many thousands of dead Iraqis, had an impact.

Inside the museum, informational displays brought the truth of the war to light. Guest speakers read lists of U.S. and Iraqi victims’ names, and addressed topics such as the U.S. military use of depleted uranium weaponry.
