“A Small Act”
Presented By American Friends Service Committee & the 7th Ward Neighborhood Center
HBO’s A Small Act—an extraordinary film that reveals just how powerful a gesture of kindness and generosity can be, and that an education is perhaps the most generous gift of all.
In a nutshell, A Small Act tells the story of one Swedish woman, Hilde Back, whose sponsorship of a young Kenyan student, Chris Mburu, at about $15/month over several years, enabled him not only to attend secondary school and then university but eventually launched him into Harvard Law, paving the way to his job as an international human rights lawyer at the United Nations. Now in her eighties, Hilde meets Chris for the first time as he launches his own small act of benevolence: the Hilde Back Education Fund for the children of his village. Filmed against the backdrop of the ethnic violence following the 2007 Kenyan presidential election, the film explores how education is the first step in fostering peace and tolerance.
