Public Hearings for Proposed Private Prisons in San Luis (Yuma)

Tuesday, August 16, 2011 - 6:00pm - 10:00pm

There are TWO proposed prisons for Yuma.  Management and Training Corporation (MTC) has proposed to build a 3,000-bed prison and GEO Group seeks to build one with 2,000-3,000 beds.

The American Friends Service Committee condemns the decision to build more private prisons as unnecessary and deeply irresponsible given the state’s economic crisis and the dismal safety records of all four of the corporations involved.

As you can see, it is going to be a serious task to ensure that there is a voice of opposition at all of these hearings.  AFSC-AZ is teaming up with Grassroots Leadership and Private Corrections Working Group to help mobilize people in Arizona to speak out against privatization.  WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Go through your contacts and get this information to ANYONE you know who lives in any of these towns.  Distant relations, friends of friends, college roomies—anyone.  It is very important that the voices of the local community are heard.
  2. Sign up to attend one or more of the hearings.  If you are in Tucson, we will set up a carpool.  We will do our best to arrange for overnight accommodations for the Winslow and Yuma hearings.  If you live in Phoenix, we will try to get you in touch with others there who might be able to carpool.  We will provide you with talking points and background info.  Contact us at 520.623.9141 or afscaz@afsc.org
  3. Be on the lookout for petitions about the proposed prisons, sign them, and forward them widely.

Stay tuned for more information from us about the hearings.  Please help spread the word—We need to have a strong presence to send a message that Arizona doesn’t want more private prisons!
